In field trials on sown irrigated pasture at Stara Zagora and Pleven, Bulgaria, and on natural mountain pasture (Nardus stricta type) at Smolan, N was applied at 0, 80, 160, 320 or 480 kg/ha in 1 or 4 applications. Yields increased significantly with increasing N, but tended to be lower, especially at high N, with the single than with 4 applications. The proportion of legumes in the sward was reduced by increasing N.
