Inhibition of foliar respiration in ozone-exposed Pinto bean plants

Inhibition of foliar respiration in ozone-exposed Pinto bean plants

Phytopathology 62(5): 499

A frequent and early symptom of ozone toxicity in Pinto beans following fumigation (0.30-0.35 p.p.m. for 3-4 h) was water-soaking of the foliage. After 24 h characteristic necrotic stipple or bleaching developed. Significant inhibition of respiration concurred with the water-soaking, contrasting with the increased respiration rate that accompanied visible injury.
