Metabolite levels and enzyme activities in the bovine mammary gland at different stages of lactation. I. Metabolite levels related to energy production

Metabolite levels and enzyme activities in the bovine mammary gland at different stages of lactation. I. Metabolite levels related to energy production

Journal of Dairy Research 40(1): 7-15

Mammary gland samples from groups of heifers, peak-lactation cows, late-lactation and dry cows were obtained, immediately after slaughter, by a freeze-clamping technique, and metabolite contents (per g fresh wt. and per mg DNA) were determined. Pyruvate, lactate and AMP levels varied insignificantly between the groups, whereas malate, ATP and ADP contents were markedly higher in cows with high milk yields; values at the peak of lactation were 2-3 X higher than those in dry cows.
