Milk production practices on forty-five dairy farms in two creamery areas in County Cork. I. Farm structure, herd structure and output of milk

Milk production practices on forty-five dairy farms in two creamery areas in County Cork. I. Farm structure, herd structure and output of milk

Journal of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Irish Re ic 68: 76-91

In 1967/68, 45 farms totalling 3553 acres were surveyed. 50% of herds had more than or equal to 14 cows and supplied more than or equal to 7000 gal of milk to the creamery/yr. Only 1 farm, with a herd of 44 cows, approached the viability threshold for dairy enterprises in the EEC, i.e. a min. herd size of 50 cows. Only 38% of the farms were considered capable of supporting 50 cows. In 1968 average annual milk yields were 325 gal/acre and 575 gal/cow.
