Mites and house dust allergy. I. Comparison between house dust and mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and D. farinae) skin reactivity

Skin tests were carried out in Florence, Italy, on 279 patients, most of whom had perennial asthma or rhinitis, with extracts of house dust and extracts of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Trt.) and D. farinae Hughes. The results suggested that mites, of which the former species is the most potent allergen, comprise the most important but not the sole allergenic material in house dust and appear to be responsible for the sensitisation in many patients with perennial asthma or rhinitis.
