Nitrogen requirements of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum, L.) varieties 'Blueboy' and 'Redcoat'

Wheat Blueboy and Redcoat were grown in 1970-1 at 5 sites in Pennsylvania on limestone-derived soils with autumn, spring or split applications of 0, 34, 67, 100, 135 or 168 kg N/ha as ammonium sulphate. The N content of grain plus straw associated with maximum attainable DM yield was similar between sites and cultivars, the mean N content being 1.38 plus or minus 0.06%. Grain yields were invariably depressed when the N content of grain plus straw exceeded 1.22 plus or minus 0.06%.
