Nosema cuneatum sp. n. (Microsporida: Nosematidae) in grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

Nosema cuneatum sp. n., which was isolated from Melanoplus confusus Scud. in Montana, was found to be characterised in fresh preparations by oval to cuneate spores averaging 4.8 mu m long and 3.4 mu m wide and by infections in the pericardium, fat-body, gonads, tracheal matrix, midgut epithelium, Malpighian tubules and neural tissues. The various stages observed in the life-cycle are described. Studies of infectivity showed that N. cuneatum caused symptoms of disease within ten days from the time of inoculation and increased mortality within 18 days, spores being prominent after 8-9 days. It was transmitted experimentally to M. sanguinipes (F.), M. bivittatus (Say), M. femurrubrum (Deg.), M. differentialis (Thos.), M. infantilis Scud. and schistocerca americana (Dru.).
