On the nature of the role of birds in foci of tick-borne encephalitis in the southern taiga and subtaiga forests of western Siberia

Trudy Biologicheskogo Instituta, Sibirskoe Otdelenie, Akademiya Nauk SSSR 14: 181-190

In May-August of 1967 and 1968, 1246 birds belonging to 100 species were collected in southern taiga and subtaiga forests in the Tomsk and Tyumen' regions of the Soviet Union. All were examined for ticks, and blood samples from 1083 birds were tested for the presence of the viruses of tick-borne encephalitis and Omsk haemorrhagic fever. Ixodes persulcatus Schulze, and occasionally other species of Ixodes, were found on 32 species of birds.
