Peripheral metabolism of thyroxine and triiodothyronine in patients with endemic goitre, natives of endemic-goitre areas in Czechoslovakia (with regard to obesity)

Peripheral metabolism of thyroxine and triiodothyronine in patients with endemic goitre, natives of endemic-goitre areas in Czechoslovakia (with regard to obesity)

Endokrinologie 61(1): 65-74

Peripheral metabolism of thyroxine and triiodothyronine was studied in 11 Czech patients with endemic goitre and one obese without goitre. All had been consuming salt with 25 mg KI/kg NaCl for 10 years. In euthyroid patients with goitre metabolism was not accelerated and protein-bound I (PBI) was normal. In those with thyrotoxicosis, values for extrathyroidal thyroxine and triiodothyronine I, degradation rate of thyroxine and triiodothyronine, I in faeces and urine and PBI were high. In the one patient with hypothyroidism those values were low. In all, I in faeces which originated from thyroxine and triiodothyronine was less than that in urine.
