Preliminary investigations on some insects causing minor damage to water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes

Preliminary investigations on some insects causing minor damage to water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes

Report, West Indian Station, Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control: 5

Field observations and preliminary tests indicated that Thripticus sp. attacks E. crassipes (and possibly other Pontederiaceae) with only slight effect on the plant. Taosa inexacta nymphs hastened the collapse of E. crassipes under laboratory conditions. A third phytophagous insect (Megamelus electrae) is under investigation.
