Preliminary studies on ratooning in Sorghum varieties and hybrids

Preliminary studies on ratooning in Sorghum varieties and hybrids

Madras Agricultural Journal 59(5): 301-303

In a trial in the summer monsoon season of 1968-9, 16 sorghum were cut so as to leave the stubble (a) 10, (b) 15 or (c) 22.5 cm long. The mean numbers of the shoots produced at 25 days after cutting were 3.9, 4.0 and 4.2 with (a), (b) and (c), respectively. Plant height, leaf number, length of the 4th leaf and days to 50% flowering increased, but length and breadth of panicles and 1000-grain weight decreased in the ratoon crop compared with values for the seed-sown crop.
