Starting in October 1971, 50 shorthorn cows, 3 months pregnant, were allotted to two groups and fed on low-selenium hay (0.014 mg/kg) until June 1972 when they were released with their calves to Se-deficient pasture. Both groups had a mineral and vitamin mix. Group 1 received no treatment, Group 2 were provided with Se and vitamin E in the mixture for the last 6 months of pregnancy and 1 month after calving. The mix was not available to calves.
