Problems in evaluating dairy sires

Problems in evaluating dairy sires

1st World Congress on Genetics applied to Livestock Production, 7-11 October 1974-2 Round tables: 99-103

The herdmate method of sire evaluation was implemented in the USA in 1954. Research has demonstrated that the herdmate comparison has been biased by incorrect adjustment for age at calving, genetic trend, genetic differences between sire sampling programmes, non-random distribution of AI sires among herds, and non-random sampling of mates within a herd. There are differences between sires in days non-pregnant which are independent of milk production.
