Progesterone treatment of mares with abnormal oestrous cycles early in the breeding season

Progesterone treatment of mares with abnormal oestrous cycles early in the breeding season

Journal of the South African Veterinary Medical Association 44(1): 37-45

Seven mares in extended oestrus were given 50, 75 or 100 mg progesterone every other day for 10 days or 100 or 125 mg progesterone daily for 7 successive days. Behavioural oestrus was suppressed within 2 days of the end of treatment in all females receiving doses of 100 or 125 mg; post-treatment oestrus occurred within 3 days of the last injection, and a CR of 75-80% was obtained.
