Questing behavior in the adult american dog tick Dermacentor variabilis Say. (Acarina: Ixodidae)

Questing behavior in the adult american dog tick Dermacentor variabilis Say. (Acarina: Ixodidae)

Acarologia 15(1): 37-42

The questing behaviour of Dermacentor variabilis (Say) is regulated as follows. Non-questing ticks remain in the ground surface microclimate until they regain their saturated weight. The saturated weight required for questing is temperature dependent, with a maximum at 20 deg C and decreasing towards non-questing saturated weight at 5 deg and 40 deg C. Soil temperatures, even under saturated conditions, can regulate the questing response.
