Rapid estimation of crude fat in mixed feeds and components of mixed feeds

Fat was estimated by refractometer with xylamone or n-nonane as solvent. Values were reproducible in the range 0.5 to 8% except for coarse groundnut and soya bean meals. With some exceptions values differed from those obtained by Soxhlet extraction by 1 to 21% when ether was used and by 1 to 18% with petroleum ether.
