Reproduction in the gilt. 1. The influence of age and weight at puberty on ovulation rate and embryo survival in the gilt

Reproduction in the gilt. 1. The influence of age and weight at puberty on ovulation rate and embryo survival in the gilt

Animal Production 21(2): 183-189

53 British Landrace (BL) X (BL X Large White) gilts were selected at 20 kg live weight, rehoused in groups of less than or equal to 12 at 55 kg, and at 64 kg vasectomised boars were introduced daily. Gilts were fed ad lib. from selection to mating twice with 1 of 4 fertile BL boars at the 2nd oestrus. Females were slaughtered on day 20 of pregnancy. Age at puberty averaged 178.9 days (135-235) and weight at puberty 90.5 kg (70-125).
