In 1969-1970 when the experiments were conducted low yields were given because of drought. On sandy soils in Botswana 45 kg P2O5/ha was the only treatment for maize which produced economic returns. Nitrogen however aggravated the moisture deficiency. In Lesotho maize and sorghum both responded to N, P and K.
