Nitrogenase activities, estimated by C2H2 reduction, in field samples of roots with adhering soil, washed roots, root surface soil and rhizosphere soil were 8.55, 7.60, 0.18 and 0.07 n moles C2H4 hr-1g-1. Sucrose addition enhanced nitrogenase activity in soil containing Azotobacter paspali.
