Screening of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) varieties against Striga lutea

Genetic stock consisting of 12 inbreds (Durgapura Bajra Series or DBS), 19 hybrids produced by crossing the male sterile line TF 23A with DBS inbreds, HB 1, TF 23A and 14 established varieties of P. typhoides were tested for resistance to S. lutea infection in the greenhouse. The male sterile TF 23A showed very high resistance and no S. lutea plants emerged. The DBS inbreds showed a high degree of tolerance; S. lutea emergence was only 4-13% that in the control.
