Seasonal forage use by deer and elk on the Starkey Experimental Forest and Range, Oregon

Seasonal forage use by deer and elk on the Starkey Experimental Forest and Range, Oregon

Research Paper, Forest Service, USDA (PNW-112): 12

In an area of Pinus ponderosa and Pseudotsuga menziesii in the Blue Mountains, Oregon, in 1964-6, the seasonal forage use by deer and elk was determined for open forest, dense forest and grassland. From the abundance of the various species and the extent to which they were used, the forage ratio (percentage in the diet:percentage of the total available forage) and food grade (forage abundance weighted for species for which no preference was shown) were calculated.
