Body weight at birth and 6 mth of age averaged 37 and 150 kg resp. for 4 purebred Holstein-Friesian (HF), 42 and 168 kg for 6 HF X Hereford, and 47 and 170 kg for 2 HF X Charolais male calves; the corresponding figures for 5, 9 and 5 females of the 3 types were 37 and 147; 39 and 149; and 42 and 147 kg. All calves were weaned at 28 days of age. The differences in growth rate between the sexes were significant, but those between the breeds and crosses were not.
