Snails, schistosomes and systematics: some problems concerning the genus Bulinus

Snails, schistosomes and systematics: some problems concerning the genus Bulinus

Taxonomy and ecology: 173-188

The taxonomic history of Bulinus is described and the inherent variability of the snails is stressed. Interactions between snails and Schistosoma haematobium are discussed and the problems are considered in relation to the epidemiology of schistosomiasis. The truncatus/tropicus species complex presents particular difficulty and the occurrence of polyploidy in this group is considered.
