n luvisols and cambisols under a tropical climate the increase in yield of maize grain due to mulching with rice straw mulch and forest litter mulch at 2 ton/ha over a three-year period was 46, 52 and 22% respectively. Mulched plants had a higher growth rate and increased vigour. Chlorotic symptoms occurred on unmulched plants. Mulching significantly decreased the maximum soil temperature at 5, 10 and 20 cm depths.
