Pre-cooling to 7 deg for transport was achieved by 1. hydrocooling, 2. vacuum cooling (best) or 3. a forced air method with wet or dry heads. Packaging included the use of individual polythene bags before (best) or after pre-cooling in air or a vacuum, covering the crate with a bag, or leaving the heads uncovered. Of 4 endive cvs Gigante degli Ortolani gave the best results and of the 6 lettuces Oswego and Great Lakes 659.
