In field trials in 1969-70 at 25 sites, 8 spring wheat were given (a) normal N fertilizer treatments, including a late application of 40-50 kg N/ha, (b) as (a) plus 30 kg N/ha in spring, or (c) as (b) plus 0.8-1.2 l chlormequat/ha when plants were 10-15 cm tall. Stem length was increased by (b) in 4 but was not affected in the remaining Lodging was increased, especially in Opal and Catriso.
