Stomatal movement and water relations in crops. 2. Stomatal behaviour of tobacco leaves of different ages and the influence of soil water shortage

Diurnal stomatal behaviour was studied for 3 days in (a) upper immature, (b) intermediate immature and (c) lower mature leaves of a potted tobacco plant in the glasshouse; the effects of soil moisture stress (pF) upon stomatal behaviour were also examined. Every morning, pre-dawn opening was observed in (a) and (b) but not in (c). Opening increased in all leaves with increasing light intensity after sunrise even under high soil moisture stress.
