Studies on bitter pit of apple. I. Symptoms and characterization of the extent of bitter pit

Studies on bitter pit of apple. I. Symptoms and characterization of the extent of bitter pit

Archiv fur Gartenbau 23(4): 247-256

A detailed description is given of bitter pit symptoms, symptoms resembling bitter pit, and artificially induced symptoms, based on observations of the cvs Clivia and Breuhahn and a survey of the relevant literature. Bitter pit on the fruit surface was positively correlated with that inside the fruit. A classification scheme is devised for assessing the extent of bitter pit, and disease development is characterized by an index of degrees of infestation.
