High soil temperature (min. 15 deg C) and the use of young seedlings suppported vigorous vegetative growth, resulting in longer and thicker stems, more leaves and larger leaves. The proportion of large fruits rose with the use of young seedlings and additional N. Size of fruit showed an interaction between soil temperature and moisture.
