Studies on iodine concentration in psammoma bodies in the thyroids of chronically iodine-deficient rats: effect of iodine repletion

Studies on iodine concentration in psammoma bodies in the thyroids of chronically iodine-deficient rats: effect of iodine repletion

American Journal of Pathology 73(3): 775-788

Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing initially 120 to 140 g were given a diet with about 3 mg I/kg for 12 to 15 months. In the first experiments rats were given a stock diet with I 3 mg/kg for 2 weeks to produce colloid reaccumulation; they were then given 75 mu Ci 125I as iodide intraperitoneally and kept on the diet for 24 h. Some rats were killed and the remainder were switched to a diet low in I with 0.15% propylthiouracil (PTU) and were killed after 3, 7, 12, 18 and 25 days.
