Sperm maturation is known to take place in the epididymis. As sperm capacitation is regarded as a continuation of the maturation process, the present studies on guinea-pigs were undertaken to investigate changes during and following maturation in the epididymis. Anaerobic fructolysis was higher, and respiration rate lower, after maturation than before maturation in both washed and unwashed spermatozoa.
