Abstract
Characteristics typical of the related species O. breviligulata were noted when 40 O. glaberrima varieties were studied for genetic variation. The O. glaberrima characters predominated in only seven varieties and it is concluded that introgression from O. breviligulata towards O. glaberrima has occurred rather than the reverse. The red grain and seed dormancy of the O. glaberrima varieties is typical of the putative wild progenitor, O. breviligulata.
