In the deep dormancy stage of Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola, hydroquinone and benzoquinone showed a considerable stimulatory effect on dormancy breaking which increased in the stage of shallow dormancy. In the shallow dormancy stage, guaiacol, resorcinol and L-ascorbic acid were as effective as hydroquinone and o-cresol showed a marked effect on dormancy breaking. No relationship could be established between dormancy-breaking effect and inhibition of oxygen uptake.
