Studies on the cotton bollworms in the Sudan. II. The relative efficiency of an ultra low volume formulation and certain other insecticides in the control of two species of cotton bollworms

Studies on the cotton bollworms in the Sudan. II. The relative efficiency of an ultra low volume formulation and certain other insecticides in the control of two species of cotton bollworms

Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Entomologie 70(1): 62 - 67

In the experiment conducted at Shambat, in the Sudan, and reported in this second paper, four insecticides, an ultra-low volume concentrate of malathion and DDT at 1.5 litres/feddan cyclic propylene(diethoxyphosphinyl)dithioimidocarbonate (Cytrolane 500 emulsion concentrate at 750 ml/feddan), carbaryl (Sevin 85% wettable powder at 2.25 lb./feddan) and a mixture of DDT, methyl-parathion and toxaphene (Torbidan 5% at 2 litres/feddan) were tested on cotton against Pectinophora gossypiella (Saund.) and Earias insulana (Boisd.). The best control of both species was obtained with two applications of carbaryl or the mixture of malathion and DDT, with the percentage of infested bolls remaining below 10% for six weeks after spraying. The other two insecticides were effective up to the fourth week. At the final inspection, made seven weeks after the second application, the percentages of damaged bolls recorded in plots treated with carbaryl, the mixture of malathion and DDT, the DDT, methyl-parathion and toxaphene mixture and cyclic propylene(diethoxyphosphinyl)dithioimidocarbonate were 14, 18, 23, and 45, respectively, while that for the untreated plot was 54.
