Studies on the culture of Golden Delicious apples without bagging. I. Studies on the development and control of russeting in Golden Delicious apples

Bulletin of the Akita Fruit Tree Experiment Station (5): 1-39

Bagging developing fruit reduced the incidence and degree of russeting but also lowered the organoleptic and storage qualities. Most russeting developed between the 11th and 30th days from petal-fall and depended on rainfall. The effect of rain was influenced by such factors as frost, chemicals, disease and skin defects. It was not a direct effect but appeared to be due to the leaching of substances from the withered floral organs.
