Studies on the etiology of infectious atrophic rhinitis of swine. VI. Effect of vaccination against nasal establishment of Bordetella bronchiseptica

Nine naturally infected 15-week-old piglets had serum agglutinin tires of 1:10 to 1:80. These increased to 1:10240 and 1-80000 after 2 or 3 s/c doses, respectively, of thimerosal-killed Phase I organisms in incomplete adjuvant. However, by 25 weeks of age, the piglets harboured organisms and showed turbinate atrophy to the same extent as unvaccinated animals. Sows vaccinated s/c twice during pregnancy had titres of 1:5120 to 1:10240 at parturition. Their sucking piglets had titres of 1:10240 and resisted intranasal challenge at 7 days of age, whereas unvaccinated sows and their piglets had maximum titres of 1:10, and the piglets died after challenge. Piglets' passive immunity declined, so that at 13 weeks of age titres of piglets reared in the absence of infection were 1:20 to 1:80. However, at this age, exposure to the organisms does not result in lesions. Preliminary work suggests that the passive immunity acquired from vaccinated sows resides in agglutinins in the piglets' nasal discharge.
