Study of the gastro-intestinal microflora of suckling piglets and early weaned piglets reared using different feeding systems

Study of the gastro-intestinal microflora of suckling piglets and early weaned piglets reared using different feeding systems

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Parasitenkunde, Infektionskrankheiten und Hygiene. Erste Abteilung Originale. Reihe A: Medizinische Mikrobiologie und Parasitologie 221(4): 492-510

The bacterial flora was studied in 62 healthy piglets slaughtered at 2-68 days of age over a seven-year period. They had been suckled or weaned early and fed whole cow's milk 2-4 times a day or given supplemented cow's milk in liquid form 3-4 times a day or in powder form unrestricted. The artificially fed piglets had higher coliform counts in the stomach and small intestines than those suckled, the highest counts being in those given supplemented dried milk powder.
