When sugar beet was grown 2 years running in the same field, root yields were much reduced in the 2nd year in direct-sown crops, but were unchanged or even higher in transplanted crops. Yields of 2nd-year crops were markedly increased by applying 20-30% more fertilizer than usual. Root sugar content was always lower in the 2nd year.
