Sugar Transport in Immature Internodal Tissue of Sugarcane: II. Mechanism of Sucrose Transport

Sugar Transport in Immature Internodal Tissue of Sugarcane: II. Mechanism of Sucrose Transport

Plant Physiology 49(5): 789-793

The mechanism by which sucrose is transported into the inner spaces of immature internodal parenchyma tissue of sugar cane was studied in short term experiments (15-300 sec). Transport of sucrose, glucose and fructose was characterized by a Vmax of 1.3 mu mol/g fresh weight in 2h, and each of these sugars mutually and competitively inhibited transport of the other two.
