Suitable physical conditions of field soil layers for root penetration. 1. Indices for the classification of field soils and field soil productivity in Chiba Prefecture

Suitable physical conditions of field soil layers for root penetration. 1. Indices for the classification of field soils and field soil productivity in Chiba Prefecture

Journal of the Science of Soil and Manure, Japan 43(3): 92-97

esults of a field survey during 1959-1970 agreed fairly well with the results of laboratory experiments using an artificially packed soil. A soil strength of 10 kg/cm2, water ratio of <18-23 and air ratio of <13-17 were favourable for the penetration of crop roots. With an increase in the solid ratio or soil strength above the upper limit for root penetration, large pores (<0.2 mm diameter) decreased abruptly to 15% or below.
