Synchronisation of oestrus in cattle using a progestogen (SC 21009) and a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin F2 alpha (cloprostenol)

108 Limousin suckling cows and 42 Charolais heifers at testing stations and 136 Charolais heifers on commercial farms were given (1) 2 intramuscular injections of 500 mu g cloprostenol (ICI 80996) 10-12 days apart, (2) a subcutaneous implant containing 6 mg SC 21009 for 7 days plus 500 mu g cloprostenol intramuscularly on implant removal, (3) a similar implant left in place for 9 days plus 5 mg oestradiol valerate at implantation and 600 IU PMSG (heifers) or 700 IU PMSG (cows) on implant removal, or (4) no treatment. Animals at the test station were inseminated 12 h after the start of oestrus observed within 5 days of ending treatment, the heifers on commercial farms were inseminated twice (at fixed intervals after treatment), and untreated animals (Limousins) were inseminated at spontaneous oestrus. For the Charolais heifers, in groups 1 and 2 resp., the percentage in oestrus 48-84 h after treatment was 77.2 and 85, and CR (of animals inseminated) was 76 and 58.8%. For the Limousin cows, in groups 1 and 3 resp., the percentage in oestrus 24-108 h after treatment was 65 and 81.6, and the CR was 64.5 and 61.8%. The untreated Limousins (group 4) had a CR of 62.8%. The CRs after 2 fixed-interval inseminations in the 3 treated groups resp. were 60, 40.6 and 46.3%.
