The availability of water in peat soils

Pot trials were carried out to compare the growth of several plants, including tomato, in loess, silty clay and high-moor and low-moor peat. Measurements of humidity and corresponding osmotic pressure of these substrates showed that plants wilted over a range of osmotic pressure rather than at a fixed value and that substrate properties affected wilting more than did species differences.
