Using the method of systematic variations (described by Homes, M.V. in Soil Science 96, 380-386) sunflowers were grown in 40-ml pots in nutrient solutions containing various combinations of N, S, P, K, Ca and Mg and Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, B and Mo and various ratios between major and trace elements. Symptoms of trace-element deficiency developed at a major element:trace element ratio of 2000:1, while at a ratio of 100:1 plant growth was retarded.
