The effect of different rates and times of application of nitrogen on the yield and quality of whole crop barley



Experimental Husbandry (28): 1-6



In field trials in 1969, barley was given 75, 113 or 150 kg N/ha (a) all at sowing, (b) half at sowing and half at Feeke's growth stage (GS)5, or (c) half at sowing and half at GS10. In 1970-1, N was applied at 50-175 kg/ha with treatments (a) and (b). Crops were cut at 35% DM. Yields were highest with 113 kg N/ha applied at (a) in 1969 and with 125 kg/ha at (a) in 1970-1, although yields were not significantly lower at 100 kg N/ha.
