The effect of gradually increased rates of nitrogen on sugar beet yield and nutrient uptake

In trials in 1964-7, root yields of sugar beet responded to N rates up to 120 kg/ha and leaf yields responded to rates up to 180 kg/ha. Only in the sugar beet production region of Czechoslovakia did the effect of N on root yields vary from year to year in crops grown in a lucerne/winter wheat/sugar beet rotation, and in only 1 year was the effect positive. High root and leaf yield responses/kg N were obtained only in the more humid potato production region.
