The effect of selection on the fertility of translocation heterozygotes in the house fly

A line of Musca domestica L. carrying an autosomal translocation was maintained through 10 generations by mating translocation heterozygote males to non-translocated females, the two genotypes being recognised by marker genes. Selection was applied for enhanced egg hatchability and as a result, the mean increased by about 10%, but a plateau was reached beyond which there was no further response to selection.
