The effect of the clonal interstock on the apple tree root system

Root development in Antonovka Obyknovennaya grafted on seedlings of the same and in one case on M.9 was compared with root development in trees with 10-cm Antonovka Obyknovennaya (control), PK-14, M.9, MM.106, Red-leaved Paradise or A-2 interstocks. All interstocks stimulated the development of the root system compared with the control. Trees with dwarfing M.9 interstocks had better root anchorage than those on M.9 rootstocks.
