In 4 field trials during 1968-71, sugar beet was given all combinations of 3 sowing dates (mid-Mar. to early-May), 3 harvesting dates (late-Sept. to early-Dec.) and 0, 75, 150 or 225 kg N/ha. Increase in the length of the growing season increased sugar yield markedly, but had no effect on the N level required for maximum yield. Sugar yields showed no further yield response to N rates above 75 kg/ha.
