The food situation in Africa: towards an Africa food development plan

The paper, prepared by the secretariat of the ECA, highlights the current world food situation, outlines the main factors responsible for the present global food shortages, indicates recent trends in African food production, consumption and trade, discusses the main constraints to increasing food production in the region and the potential for expansion, gives a summary of the steps taken by FAO to improve world food security and the main objectives of the World Food Conference 1974, and concludes with an outline of the role which ECA has played and will play in the preparation and implementation of an African Food Security and Food Development Plan.
