The influence of irrigation, stand density and nitrogen fertilizer on the grain yield of maize cv. INRA 200

In field trials in 1970-2 at 2 sites, maize INRA 200 grown at 4, 6, 8 or 10 plants/m2 and given 80-280 kg N/ha (40-kg increments) was given no irrigation or irrigated so that the field capacity in the top 60 cm of soil did not decrease below 50%. Irrigation was effective only on light soil, increasing yields by 48%. Depending on site and year, increase in plant density increased grain yields 25-58% without irrigation and 31-71% with irrigation.
